Peter Pan no Bouken (ピーターパンの冒険, "The Adventures of Peter Pan") is the Japanese anime variation of Peter Pan by J.M.Barrie.
It was first aired in Japan on January 8th - December 24 1989 and had 41 episodes (however it's premiere was postponed till January 15th following the royal funeral of the then current emperor). The series was also later translated and released in several international audiences worldwide in 1990, sometimes under the name Peter Pan: The Animated Series. While the first twenty three episodes were a loose adaption to Barrie's classic tale, those remaining eighteen ones would introduce a more completely original arc that featured brand new supporting characters that were unique to this series. Much like the series Fox's Peter Pan & the Pirates it features an episode where Michael celebrates his birthday in Neverland. However how Peter deals with this series of events greatly differs on to how the other variation does.
Differences[]
Differences from the book or other Peter Pan versions
- Nippon's supposed mascot Rascal the Raccoon makes frequent cameos throughout the series.
- Specified time period the series is set in is unclear as to whether it is still the late nineteenth century or the correct time period the actual story takes place in turn of the century or Edwardian times.
- There is is an alternative version to character of Mary Darling called Elizabeth.
- Character of John Darling has a different middle name here which is Julian.
- Neverland is not located somewhere in one of the vast oceans instead it is a floating island hidden somewhere in the sky.
- Weapon of choice Peter normally uses here is not a dagger or a sword but some sort of scarf tooth.
- Hook lost his right hand after Neverland's Crocodile bit it off during a fight with Peter not because Pan removed it first before throwing it to said Croc.
- Iron hook hand of Hook tends to be substituted for a pincer like claw in many episodes.
- Lost Boys characters Nibs and Twins are left out of this animated series story-line making Curly in charge after Peter.
- Peter and company do not live in a subterranean house but in alternative accommodation such as a tree house complete with water wheel and then a mobile home on wheels.
- John does not share a bed with the Lost Boys but with his brother Michael.
- Starky's younger sister is the specific family member of his who is referenced in this series.
- Lost Boys accompany Peter and Tink in their own flying machine to visit The Darlings. Thereby establishing in the season finale that they remained with him in Neverland for all of them to then discover that said Darlings have since grown up and end up meeting and taking Jane with them back to Neverland.

Characters[]
- Peter Pan (ピーター・パン , Pītā Pan) : Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Nika Futterman: Dubbed); The hero of this anime. He is a short-tempered but has a caring character and accepts what his friends say. He has the strong belief that he will not forgive anyone who violate freedom, and fights to keep Neverland a free and livable world.
- Wendy Darling (ウェンディ・モイラー・アンジェラ・ダーリング , Wendi Moirā Anjera Dāringu) Voiced by: Naoko Matsui (Michelle Turmel: Dubbed); The oldest of three siblings who flies away to Neverland with Peter Pan (followed by her siblings). She is a feisty, kind, clever, jolly tomboy who is capable of helping her family and friends defy Hook's forces. In the end her daughter Jane takes her place in the series finale.
- Tinker Bell (ティンカー・ベル , Tinkā Beru) : Voiced by: Sumi Shimamoto (Kath Soucie/Pauline Little: Dubbed); A fairy and one of Peter's companions. She is abbreviated as "Tink" (ティンク , Tinku).

- Curly (カーリー , Kārī) : Voiced by: Yūko Mita (Jeff Bennett/Arthur Holden: Dubbed); A lost boy, who is small and wears a pot on his head. While sleeping he always has a tendency of falling out of the bed which he shares with the other lost boys, but doesn't tend to wake him (like Slightly he is an accomplished inventor though he seems much more smarter), he is also in charge of the other Lost Boys when Peter's not around.
- Slightly (スライトリー , Suraitorī) : Voiced by: Hiroko Emori (Jason Marsden/Tedd Dillon: Dubbed); One of the Lost Boys, who it seems is very thick but the same time is something of an accomplished inventor, wears a wide white coat and a white cap with rabbit ears hanging down.
- Tootles (トートルズ , Tōtoruzu) : Voiced by: Kazue Ikura (Alanna Ubach: Dubbed); One of the Lost Boys. He is tall but seems to be the most gloomy boy in Peter Pan's camp. He accidentally shoots Wendy down when Tink tricks him into shooting her.

- Captain Hook (フック船長 , Fukku Senchō) : Voiced by: Chikao Ōtsuka; The main villain, and leader of the pirates, who tries his hardest to defeat Peter Pan. He doesn't have his right hand and an alternative to his hook hand is a pincer like claw. Although he is the captain, he is a pretty clumsy person.
- Smee (スミー , Sumī) : Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata An old pirate that serves under Captain Hook, but is too kind to be a pirate, he is Hook's main helper.
- Bill (ビル , Biru) : Voiced by: Daisuke Gōri; He is also a pirate and one of the strongest.
- Cecco (チェッコ , Chekko) The leader of the pirates when Hook is not around. He keeps many knives in his hat.

- Robert (ロバート , Robāto) : Voiced by: Issei Futamata; Pirate in charge of Hook's artillery.
- Sinistra Darkness (ダークネス, Dākunesu) European version : Sinistra (シニストラ, Shinisutora): Voiced by: Hisako Kyōda; The evil queen of darkness, who serves as the main antagonist later on in the series. She is a witch who attempts to extinguish freedom from Neverland, also regards both Peter Pan and Captain Hook as enemies. She has three henchmen that help her.
- Luna (ルナ , Runa) : Voiced by: Maria Kawamura; A powerful Princess of Light, with a dark and powerful alter-ego.
- Crocodile Watch (時計ワニ , Tokei Wani); When Peter fought Hook long ago, this crocodile ate Hook's right hand. Ever since then, he's been trying to eat the rest of him. This croc also happened to had swallowed a clock, which is the cause of the ticking sound that accompanies him.
